Psychosocial Issues During Adolescence
What it is:
Identity vs Role confusion is a part of Erikson's theory of Psychosocial Development which occurs during adolescence (12-18). This is a time of experimentation for teens in which they are trying to find who they are and where they fit in the world. During this time it is common to see teens changing their style of dress, their group of friends, and what type of music and entertainment they enjoy. This is also a time for many when they begin to experiment with their sexuality. |
For the Parents: The key for success during this time (achieving Identity) is to be open and supportive. Certain aspects, such as sexual orientation or even music, may not be what you wanted for them. Remember that the teen is trying to find THEIR place in the world, not yours. Blocking or prohibiting certain behaviors (with the exception antisocial behaviors) can actually hinder their personal growth and lead to Role Confusion which can be an obstacle which may affect them well into adulthood including issues such as depression, isolation, aggression, and drug and alcohol abuse.
What it is:
Juvenile Delinquency includes but is not limited to: Vandalism Theft Drug and alcohol abuse Assault Risk factors include: Poverty Harsh Discipline Uninvolved Parenting Lower Self Esteem Juvenile Delinquency is broken into two main behavior groups: Adolescent-limited antisocial behavior, which is relatively minor offenses, and non consistent, but unchecked could become... Life-course persistent antisocial behavior, which is consistent and follows into adulthood |
For the Parents: The most important step in prevention and rehabilitation is a supportive and active participation in your teens lives. Preventative measures for at risk teens can include after school activities as well as mentoring programs such as Big Brothers Big Sisters. If the teen is already an active delinquent, interventions such as therapy or rehabilitation may be needed. Rehabilitation programs such as A.R.T and more intensive programs such as Scared Straight programs through local authorities or Juvenile Boot Camps.
